BODY & APPEARANCE.
⒈ Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Mitsuki is about 5' — very petite, and slender. She's long-limbed though, and has some lean muscle from her Magical Hunter fighting, but generally looks very fragile and delicate.
⒉ How old is she?
Sixteen.
⒊ Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
Mitsuki's very withdrawn. She tends to shrink in on herself so as to appear diminished. It’s not conscious behavior. She has reasonably good posture but she doesn’t carry herself with confidence at all. Her body language is very feminine, but it’s less girlish and more like that of a proper young woman. She covers her mouth when she laughs. She is not comfortable with invasions of personal space, and tries to keep polite distances from others.
⒋ How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
She's healthy, with no physical disabilities, and thanks to the whole fighting monsters thing, she's in shape. She has no illnesses, though she is prone to colds in the winter.
⒌ How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
She's very graceful and elegant, rarely trips over her own feet. She is rarely relaxed, and her body language is somewhat tense and stilted at times. A good way to describe the way she moves is "precise." Her gracefulness isn't a natural thing, rather, it's the result of a lot of concentrated effort.
⒍ How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
She's a pretty girl (not drop dead gorgeous, but attractive enough), delicate and ladylike. But she doesn't have a very positive view of her appearance, and tries not draw much attention to herself. She tries not to think too much about the way she looks, nor does she talk about it or encourage discussion about her looks. It's not that she's ugly--it's that her negative view of herself pretty much extends to all aspects of her life, including her appearance.
⒎ Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
She is pale naturally, but she might get a light tan in the summer, depending. Her skin is mostly clear. There are a few scars on her back and various other places that are covered up by her clothes most of the time.
⒏ Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Her hair is blue! It's a very pale blue (bluish-silver), and about shoulder length. It's got a slight wave to it, and when wet tends to get a bunch of wavy tangles.
⒐ What color are her eyes?
Bright blue, several shades darker than her hair.
⒑ Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Nope.
⒒ What are her chief tension centers?
Most...places. She's a very tense person. It manifests a lot in her shoulders, neck and lower back.
⒓ What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
She wears her school uniform most of the time, which changes slightly based on the seasons. She's always very neat. Outside of school, she wears lots of skirts and dresses, in either soft or neutral colors. She will very rarely, if ever, wear slacks or jeans. She wears vests and sweaters/cardigans...also scarves of varying colors. She probably has a nice wool peacoat or two for the fall and winter. In either casual wear or her school uniform, she will always be wearing a pair of black framed glasses. She is not a very flashy dresser, but she has some jewelry, mainly simple bracelets, earrings and necklaces, hairclips, so on and so forth. A lot of her jewelry has blue accents and some of it is moon or celestial themed. Also! She always wears a pretty, old-fashioned silver key around her neck. The key has a blue jewel on the top, shaped like a stylized raindrop.
⒔ Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
They fit well, and she wears her clothing very neatly, and although they are made to be comfortable, Mitsuki is not someone used to being comfortable and so has to resist the urge to constantly adjust her clothing in public out of nervous habit.
⒕ Does she dress the same on the job as she does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
I guess I can use her magical girl outfit for this, so: Her magical girl uniform is reminiscent of a kunoichi's: dark blue body suit, face guard and billowy scarf thing (it's white and fades to an icy light blue at the ends), with a sash around her waist (the same color scheme as her scarf). She wears light armor on her shoulders, arms and legs. She also ties her hair up in a high ponytail in this form. Her outfit's lot more form-fitting and revealing than anything she'd normally wear, and she is not as awkwardly aware of her body in this clothing, as she's too busy kicking ass. She gets her awesome weapon in this form, a kusarigama (or chain sickle). It likely has moon accents too. Her color theme is primarily blues, with some white and gray. Here is an image of Mitsuki in her school uniform and as a magical girl, with the added addition of Umi. Credit goes to cupnoodles. The cute little chibi image at the beginning of her survey is a good representation of her casual wear.
⒖ You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Simple cotton underwear, nothing fancy. Her bras are not fancy either.
SPEECH.
⒈What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
It's in about the middle range for a girl/woman's voice, and gentle. Very calming.
⒉ How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
It's soft, and even for the most part, but she does tend to hesitate quite a bit, particularly when she is nervous...or around Kotone, or both.
⒊ Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
She's very, very polite. She rarely refers to anyone by their personal name, instead referring to them by their family name and the -san honorific. She does not have any verbal tics, besides the occasional stammer and an overall hesitance to speak.
⒋ What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
She speaks Japanese fluently. She knows some English, and is learning more of it.
⒌ Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
In her magical girl form, her language is far more curt and less polite, as well as more direct and to the point. Her voice is not as soft, and has a harsher edge to it. She speaks in more masculine Japanese like this.
⒍ Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
Mitsuki is not a very good impromptu speaker. She has to think very carefully about what she says before she speaks, or otherwise she will clam up and not speak at all.
⒎ Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
She is eloquent, though she does sometimes stammer or falter over her words when she is nervous or frightened. As aforementioned, her language changes when she is "on duty" as a magical girl, and while not inarticulate, her speech does become much more direct.
MENTAL & EMOTIONAL.
⒈ How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
She's very intelligent, a result of diligent study as well as "natural" intelligence, and while not extremely naive, she's far more book smart than street smart. She's dealt with unpleasant things in her personal life, but has been kept away from most of the ugliness of the outside world.
⒉ Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
She is good at both, though in general prefers to deliberate and have a lot of time to plan. As a Magical Hunter, however, she's able to think very quickly and come up with solutions and strategies on the spot. In her everyday life, she does less of this.
⒊ Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
She's capable of logic, and uses it more frequently in battle mode, but she's a sensitive, intuitive person as well, and empathizes with people. The aforementioned logic doesn't apply as much to her personal relationships, because she has a very skewed, negative opinion of herself, which reflects in her choice of friends...or love interests. She's concerned with practicalities like school and a future career, but all of her negativity is pushed inward. She's idealistic when it comes to other people, in other words? She likes to believe the best in people, and doesn't think the world is totally awful. Yet.
⒋ What kind of education has the character had?
She's gone to primary and secondary school, and is now in upper secondary school. Her education has been very...intensive and well-rounded. She received tutoring in various subjects outside of school, mainly in music...possibly some dance.
⒌ What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
She's good at history--she has a good memory and retains information well. She enjoys both life sciences and physical sciences, as well as mathematics. She's generally really smart all-around though. She likes to cook! She's not the best at it, but she tries really hard and is slowly improving, and she is very neat and orderly, so she likes to clean. She played the viola for years, but stopped as soon as she hit her teens (when her sister left) and hasn't picked up an instrument since. She used to be quite good at it though.
She'd like to learn other languages, as she would find such a skill useful. She'd want to be a better cook, and she pushes herself a lot so she'd like...to be better at pretty much every subject she studies, even if she excels in them. She'd like to be better at sports too, I think--the only one she can handle with any skill is swimming, and that is a bonus she received from her powers.
⒍ Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
Introverted. She's painfully withdrawn in an almost crippling way, and becomes nervous and anxious if pushed into unfamiliar social situations, despite appearing to be fine. Her behavior will improve over time, but she'll never truly be an extrovert.
⒎ Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
She's even-tempered, and tends not to lose her temper at all, to the point of it being unhealthy. She represses a lot of her anger and it manifests as self-loathing. She is a very melancholy girl, but she's very good at hiding it. Most people don't know that she's even sad at all, and for the most part she comes off as a gentle, good-natured and polite person. She's driven, and a hard worker. She studies constantly for this reason, and throws herself into her Magical Hunter duties as well.
⒏ Is she more likely to act, or to react?
It depends on the situation, but she's more inclined to act in situations where someone needs help, and react when she is in a situation and needs help, haha.
⒐ Which is her default: fight or flight?
Flight, mainly. In her normal life she is far more inclined to back down than continue an argument, and lets people walk all over her. As a fighter, she's braver, and pragmatic. She assesses a situation, fights if she can handle it, and if retreating is the best course of action, she will do so.
In situations where she is defending others however, she will fight. She has difficulty standing up for herself, but she will steadfastly defend others.
⒑ Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
She appreciates jokes, but she isn't very good at making them herself. Puns would make her laugh a lot--she likes cheesier, lighthearted jokes. Bathroom humor would gross her out. A prank she'd disapprove of, but as long as it didn't severely hurt or totally humiliate someone, she would secretly find it funny. She has a sense of humor herself but it takes a while for it to manifest and it tends to be fairly subtle.
⒒ Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
She is definitely depressed--Depression with Anxiety is a good diagnosis, as well as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and she has severely low self-esteem. A lot of her behavior is very self-destructive, but she's not consciously aware of most of this. She tends to fixate on things, finds comfort in ritual and order, and has a lot of difficulty sleeping.
As for dealing with them...she doesn't. She tries not to think about it and distracts herself with study, work and fighting. She devotes a lot of energy caring for people, even those who may not appreciate or deserve it.
⒓ What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
▸ Her family life was pretty normal until she hit around six years of age. Her mother's behavior grew increasingly erratic and violent, and she, her father and sister were often targets of her physical and emotional abuse--especially Mitsuki. Her parents divorced, and her father tried very hard to get custody of his girls, but was prevented from doing so, and was even barred from seeing his children for a while. Mitsuki grew increasingly withdrawn and introverted, and her sister leaving a couple of years later made things even worse.
▸ Around this time, she met her magical pet, a blue Sand Cat named Umi. This gave her someone to confide in, and for a while she was her only friend. She encouraged her to put all of her effort into studying, as it would make her mother proud of her. She improved in school rapidly after this, another important part in her life--as she finally started to gain respect and be acknowledged for her achievements. Relations with her mother slowly started to improve after this (the physical abuse at the least, stopped), but the damage had been done and nothing would really be the same afterward.
▸ The last and most recent important moment of her life was when, on her sixteenth birthday, Umi informed her that she had a grand destiny to protect others, and offered her the chance to become a Magical Hunter. As someone with little personal power and self-confidence in her day-to-day life, Mitsuki took the chance.
⒔ What does she fear?
She's afraid of her mother flipping out at her pretty much...all the time. Her mom is basically harmless now, but the damage to her psyche due to the Directors' meddling, so their relationship has sort of stagnated. Nothing has really been resolved.
Part of her is really afraid of being alone or unwanted her entire life, which is at odds with her aversion to any deep physical or emotional contact. It culminates into making her a very lonely and sad individual.
⒕ What are her hopes or aspirations?
She hopes that one day she'll be able to have fulfilling and meaningful relationships with others, but she's very afraid, and full of a lot of misplaced guilt and self-blame.
⒖ What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
She doesn't want anyone to find out much about her mother, the circumstances behind her parents' separation, and she certainly doesn't want anyone to find out how unhappy she really is. She dislikes burdening others, and a large part of her believes that what went on was her fault, and so she often blames herself. Obviously, she doesn't want anyone to discover she's a magical girl.
RELATIONSHIPS.
⒈ Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
Her relationship with her mother is...very strained. Her mother has a history of mental illness, but it was, for the most part, regulated with medication and therapy. None of them really knows why her treatments suddenly stopped working when Mitsuki and Natsuko were younger, but those three years pretty much destroyed her relationship with her children. She's improved since then, but Mitsuki is still very afraid of her on some level, and so repairing the relationship there has been extremely difficult, with more setbacks than accomplishments. They live in the same house, but it's hard for the both of them, and their relationship is very distant. There's love there, but it's tangled up and poisoned with so much resentment, hatred and fear that it will by no means be a healthy mother/daughter relationship ever again. Mitsuki both pities and is disgusted by her mother's illness, and it and her abuse are a huge source of shame for her. She would like to help her mother, and does take care of her, but she also wishes that responsibility wasn't saddled on her and that she could escape it. She feels like it's another form of punishment as well.
Her father divorced her mother when Mitsuki was about seven years old, and his attempts to see his children were thwarted at every turn. He does call, when he is able to, but he and Mitsuki are not very close at all. She honestly doesn't like talking to him much; she thinks he's a coward.
⒉ Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
She has an older sister named Natsuko. They had a pretty good relationship -- Natsuko tried her best to protect her little sister from their mother's moodswings, but as soon as she was old enough, she jumped ship and hasn't looked back. This has attributed to Mitsuki's fear of abandonment, and on some deep level she resents and even hates her sister for leaving her alone. She's ashamed of these feelings though, and does appreciate on some level that Natsuko at least makes an active effort to stay in touch with her. The decline of their relationship has been gradual, a slow-growing distance.
⒊ Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
She may be close to a cousin or an aunt here and there, but she doesn't see them a lot. She also kiind of hates her mom, oops.
⒋ Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
Not yet--she will eventually gain close relationships with her fellow Magical Hunters, who she'll see as sisters of sorts/comrades in arms. There will be some that she's closer to than others, but it remains to be seen who!
⒌ Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
As up above, her best friend or friends will be her fellow Magical Hunters.
⒍ Does she have other close friends?
Not really. She has school friends--they hang out and have lunch together, but they aren't the sort of people she confides in or tells secrets to.
⒎ Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
People gravitate to her in school, due to her being very polite, intelligent and nice, but she doesn't make friends very easily--she's really shy. A lot of her friendships come about from the effort of the other person, and not her own efforts.
⒏ Which does she consider more important: family or friends?
Initially, family. As she gains close ties with her fellow Magical Hunters, she'll begin to value them just as much or more than her family.
⒐ Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
She's single, and has never been married.
⒑ Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
No.
⒒ Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
Her first crush was a boy in primary school. He picked a tiny flower for her on the way to school and they walked home together once or twice. There was maybe a hug involved. It was very sweet and innocent, but as things at home got worse, Mitsuki began to withdraw into schoolwork, and stopped paying much attention to things like that. This incident, even though it seems small, was representative of a gradual erosion of her self-confidence and trust in others.
Kotone is her latest crush, and that started during her current year of school. She was drawn to Kotone's apparent strength, and also noticed that she seemed isolated. So she gave Kotone half a bento, and she's been fascinated by her ever since, remaining (mostly) undeterred by Kotone's rudeness and attempts to push her away. It took her a very long time to realize her feelings were a crush, and she's struggling with the implications of this.
⒓ What does she look for in a romantic partner?
Um, she doesn't really look for romantic partners, but she is drawn to strong people, I guess? People who seem to be stronger and more capable than herself. Alternatively, she likes the idea of being able to help others, so unconsciously seeks out individuals who seem damaged in some way. It's dangerous, though, and makes her kind of a magnet for people who mistreat her. It hasn't happened much, however, as she's sheltered and hasn't really dated anyone. Physical appearance is not something she places much stock in, although she does appreciate aesthetics? It's just not really...something she regards on a conscious level--it takes her a long time to realize she is attracted to someone at all, let alone physically.
⒔ Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
She has no children, and while on some level she'd like children, she is afraid of the idea of it, and thinks she'd be a bad mother because of her experiences with her own mother. She does like and have a soft spot for children though, and seems to understand and work well with them.
⒕ Does she have any rivals or enemies?
Not really! She might have another student or two trying to beat her test scores, something like that. But she doesn't acknowledge them as rivals, and focuses on her own success.
⒖ What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the Kinsey scale?
Uh, you know, the Kinsey scale is so rigid...but I'll try here. I'd put her at probably a Kinsey 2 (primarily heterosexual, more than incidentally homosexual), maybe a 3 (equally heterosexual and homosexual) later on. She's had some sweet, innocent crushes on boys before, and if her life didn't suck and she wasn't so opposed to keeping her distance from others, she could form a healthy relationship with one, date and whatnot. I can see her having close friendships with girls (if they manage to even get close to her), and those friendships blurring the line between friendship and romance, or a friendship going further. It depends on the person.
⒗ How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
Sex is pretty frightening to her, to be honest. She's curious about it and knows the clinical in-and-outs of it, but...it's a level of intimacy and trust that she can't really fathom having with another person at this point in her life. She'll have to find someone she truly trusts (and who is patient and gentle with her) to really consider it. As for its importance, it doesn't take precedence over her emotional attachment to a person, and is pretty much the last thing she's thinking about right now.
⒘ What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
She doesn't have many turn ons, or at least not any that she knows of. When or...if the time comes, something that will help her is a lot of patience and tenderness. Whoever her partner is will have to go slow and ask her a lot of questions, I guess--she'd like to be talked to, and would find it comforting. I think she would very gradually become comfortable in a more dominant sexual role, and would appreciate a partner that appealed to that part of her personality. She likes to cuddle? Haha. Um, turn offs are a lot of things, but mostly she'd be immediately turned off by unnecessary roughness or vulgarity of any sort, anything involving restraints would make her nervous too...pretty much, giving up any sort of power would be a tricky situation for her, and would depend on the partner and how long their relationship had gone on. Her sex life would be very vanilla, very slow and calm.
As for weird bedroom habits, she doesn't have many. She sleeps with her window open most of the time, even when it might be too cold for it. Her bed is big enough to sprawl out, but she doesn't, instead she curls up on her side and cuddles a giant teddy bear or something. She likes cuddling things.
BELIEFS. ⒈ Do you know your character's astrological ( zodiac of choice) sign? How well does she fit type? She's a Cancer and I picked it pretty much only because it's a water sign and fits her theme, and because it is associated with the moon and her name has that word in it. She fits the traits in a generic sense, but I didn't build her personality around her sign. ⒉ Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life? She's not particularly religious or spiritual. Her beliefs in terms of theology don't play a big part on her decision making processes. ⒊ Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? She hates the idea of killing or harming another human being--she'll only harm someone out of self-defense, or if they're hurting someone else, and doesn't believe in killing them under any circumstances. The monsters they fight, as far as she knows, are not human. If something completely traumatizing or horrific occurred, it might damage her enough to compromise this set of ethics. For instance, if one of the other magical girls was in mortal danger, she would kill but feel horrible about it. She might also mercy kill at some point. ⒋ How does she regard beliefs that differ from her own? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? It depends on the belief! She's not going to be very understanding or tolerant of a belief that say, involves killing babies or something, but generally she tries to remain open minded and understanding. ⒌ What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them? She deeply dislikes people who harm children in any way, and yes. She has a good reason for it. DAILY LIFE. ⒈ What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? Comfortable. Her mother isn't rolling in money anymore, but they has enough resources and her mother has enough money from royalties left over to provide her with a good education and get her additional lessons in various fields of study. ⒉ What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her? She's...I'm not sure, middle class? Her social status hasn't changed much in a financial sense, but when she was younger she wasn't nearly as popular or liked. The smarter and more accomplished she became, the more friends she got. It's affected her positively in some ways--she is at least mostly comfortable with one aspect of her life (her school life), but she feels consistently pressured to keep up the high standards she's set for herself. ⒊ Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others? She lives with her mother in a two-flat home. All things considered, it's a very nice house, and Mitsuki keeps things cleaned and well-organized. There is a piano/music room, but she leaves that door locked. Her mother spends pretty much all of her time in her own room — she only peeks her head out when she needs to. It's on the far end of the house, away from Mitsuki's room. She stays in there and watches her old performances all day, and Mitsuki leaves her to that.
Mitsuki's own bedroom is her sister's old room. There's an adjacent bathroom, and it's very neat but kind of sparsely decorated. There's a spot for her books/music, etc. and a desk/computer. No pictures of her family anywhere. She spends a lot of time in her room but you wouldn't be able to tell.
Mitsuki doesn't like her house, but she has nowhere else to go. ⒋ Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on? Books, more than likely, cookbooks as of late. She might kick around in an arcade if she is with friends (she dislikes arcades, but she's too polite to say otherwise), or a cafe. She's pretty much in charge of the household finances, but she isn't indulgent or irresponsible about it. ⒌ What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else? She goes to school and fights monsters as a magical girl! She's good at both, but I wouldn't say she greatly enjoys either. She's not sure what she wants to do in the future just yet. ⒍ What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time? She reads, studies, swims. Cooks. Stalks Kotone. Goes places with friends, here and there. She fights monsters, talks to Umi. ⒎ What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? She's really good about her diet. She eats a lot of finger foods--quick things like sandwiches and so on because she's always busy with something, but she tries to keep it healthy and rarely skips a meal unless she's anxious or nervous about something. She likes sweets but doesn't indulge very often, and she doesn't drink at all.
Eventually she gets in the habit of making enough lunch to share with Kotone. ASSOCIATIONS. Ⅰ Color? Pale blue. Or a soft sea-green. Ⅱ Smell? Spring rain. Ⅲ Time of day? Sunset or late at night. Ⅳ Season? Spring and winter. Ⅴ Book? Um, no...idea baww. Ⅵ Music? Ⅶ Place? Beaches, harbors. Seashores. Rocky cliff faces near large bodies of water. Quiet places. Libraries and study halls. Ⅷ Substance? Water. Ⅸ Plant? White lilies. Moonflower. Ⅹ Animal? Nightingale. |
